Venice: Canaletto and his rivals

The city of Venice inspired a school of competitive “view painters” whose achievements count among the most brilliant eighteenth century art, the exhibition celebrates the rich variety of Venetian views, know as vedute, with twenty one masterworks by Canaletto and thirty four his rivals. Responding to an art market fuel Ed largely by the British Grand Tour, these gifted painters depicted the famous vistas and remote corners of Venice in their different moods and seasons.
